CARTAJIMA

After the reconquest of the Ronda region in 1485, Cartajima became a rich village in the 17th century thanks to the nearby royal canon factory and mineral wealth
Since those glory days, when the village was dubbed 'little Cadiz', Cartajima has seen a steady decline in population.

With under 250 inhabitants, 1 shop, 1 bar, a bank and a post office, Cartajima still retains its traditional way of life, although only 18km from the thriving metropolis of Ronda.

Below Cartajima spreads 4,000 hectares of chestnut forest, the traditional economy of the Alto Genal. The surrounding mountains have been inhabited since neolithic times, with evidence of successive invaders - Visigoths, Vandals, Romans, Moors, and Christians.

The origins of Cartajima are largely unknown, although the Phoenicians may have been the first residents. In Moorish times, the village was known as Zariat al Gima

Presiding like a fortress above the Genal valley, at 850m Cartajima is the highest village in the Serrania de Ronda.
