VALLE
DE GENAL
Thanks
to the relative inaccessability of the valley for many centuries, the
residents of the pueblos still maintain a distinctly mozarabic look
and dialect.
From
it's source near Igualeja to the confluence with the Rio Guadiaro below
Gaucin, the Rio Genal is one of Andalucia's last pristine rivers. The
15 villages of the Genal valley all share the same Moorish heritage
of whitewashed walls and labryinthine alleyways.
The
upper part of the valley is known as the Alto Genal, made up of the
pueblos of Cartajima, Igualeja, Pujerra, Parauta, Juzcar, Farajan and
Alpandeire. The lower, or Bajo Genal, is comprised of the villages Atajate,
Benadalid, Banalauria, Benarraba, Algatocin, Jubrique, Genalguacil,
and Gaucin.
